My App of the week this week is …

Audulus! I love modular synth apps, and modular synths, although I’m trying to avoid going all out down that particular route. So I’m glad to have a few great modular synth apps on my iDevices and Audulus is right up there.

Of course version 2.7 bringing the app universal is a great development for Audulus, and I’ve already enjoyed using it on my iPhone 5 today.

If you don’t know the app then it’s not only a great synth, Audiobus compatible of course, and with plenty of example patches to get you started, but it’s also a very good way to start to learn the basics of synthesis, which I know can be complex.

So Audulus is my app of the week this week, and I’ve included the latest video of the now universal app.

Nice To Be Your Friend Synth (universal) arrives

Yes, that is its name, and this app is free for a few days during the launch!

Nice To Be Your Friend is the friendliest synthesizer app on iOS. There are two keyboards to play, with the top keyboard rotating around so that you can make music with a friend. What is played on one keyboard is highlighted on the other, so that you can share songs, and improvise new music.

The app is universal, and features more than one hundred sounds from an amazing SoundFont engine. The app is polyphonic and multi-timbral. Warm pianos, electric and acoustic bass, guitars, strings, and even synthesizer tones — a huge array of instruments, all at your fingertips in one app.

With full support for both MIDI input and output, you can use NTBYF to control other iOS synthesizers, or use a sequencer to trigger sounds from the app. There’s even Audiobus support, allowing you to easily record your music, or to send the sounds through the wide range of filtering and effects apps.

The app also has an integrated Apollo MIDI over Bluetooth “A” endpoint, letting you send MIDI wirelessly between a pair of iOS devices, or between iOS and a Mac. This will require the Apollo app running on the other device — the Mac version of Apollo is free, so it’s easy to try out. Once you’ve experienced the low latency of MIDI over Bluetooth, you’ll never want to use WiFi MIDI again. Bluetooth LE is available only on the iPad mini, iPad 3 and newer, and the iPhone 4S and newer; this feature is not available on the iPad 1 or 2, and on earlier iPhones.

SeekBeats turns universal, adds MIDI sync!

I do love SeekBeats, it is a great drum app, and whilst I’m glad it’s now universal I’m really glad that it’s got MIDI sync. That’s going to be incredible!

MIDI Aid (universal) arrives

MIDI Aid arrives on the app store to help you with MIDI connection problems. Here’s what to expect:

Having trouble with your MIDI controller or want to learn how it works?

MIDI Aid receives messages from external and internal MIDI devices and displays them in real-time in an easy to understand, human readable form.

It automatically detects any changes of your MIDI subsystem, e.g. when plugging in a new device, and will immediately start displaying its messages.

This app is ad-free and it will always stay like that!

It’s priced at $0.99.

YouCompose, advanced mobile classical music writing app arrives

I don’t often feature notation apps these days but this one did catch my eye and made me wonder if it might be a good fit for me personally. Here’s the description of the app:

YouCompose is the most advanced mobile classical music writing application available today.

Using the rules from the ‘common practice period’, YouCompose provides you the tools you need to create great compositions in a classical 4 part harmony style.

YouCompose comes with a built-in assistant composer. This assistant can help you compose your music in many ways.

You can enter melodies using the built-in virtual keyboard (with metronome) or enter single notes in a grid editor. Your assistant composer will then harmonize your melodies.

You can influence the way the assistant harmonizes your melodies, by setting harmonization points and other options, or you can also leave that completely to your assistant.

You can ask your assistant to compose a melody or even a complete composition.

A composition can be edited in many ways. YouCompose allows you to copy, paste, move, repeat and discard movements, segments and individual notes, enter lyrics, transpose, change gain etc.

YouCompose can play your composition with its built-in instruments and since YouCompose is Core MIDI compatible, you can also utilize a MIDI keyboard or a MIDI sound module.

You can view your composition’s full score or the individual parts and print them directly from YouCompose to an AirPrint compatible printer.

You can save compositions to your device and load them again later. Additionally, YouCompose allows you to send and receive them from other devices running YouCompose via an AirDrop connection.

You can share your composition with others by sending an email containing MIDI files and a PDF document with the full score and the individual parts.

A complete user manual is included in the App and you can print it to an AirPrint compatible printer.

Several sample compositions containing well known melodies are also included in the package.

The app is priced at $2.99
