Stravinski creates melodies with adjustable complexity

Whilst I’m not entirely sure quite how this app does what it suggest it does, I’m quite intrigued to understand it. Here’s the detail that you do get about what it does:

“Stravinski” is a melody generator that creates eight-bar piano melodies with adjustable complexity. The algorithm is based on scientific research in the field of music psychology. It is developed by the team behind “CHAiOS SYNTH 2”.

Workflow: set the complexity to your preferred level, press “generate”, then “play”. That’s it. Hit “settings” to set tempo and key, or toggle the drum tracks on/off.

Of cause “Stravinski” supports Audiobus and Inter-App Audio.

Have fun and get inspired by this next-gen melody algorithm!

Concentric Rhythm is an interactive tool for generating, developing, and exploring musical patterns, and it’s free

This looks really interesting, and potentially extremely useful too. Plus it’s free and therefore definitely worth checking out and playing with. Here are the details:

Concentric Rhythm is an interactive tool for generating, developing, and exploring musical patterns. It uses geometric transformations and many other simple processes to create, develop, and evolve music.

The looping musical timeline is visualized as a circle, which allows you to treat musical patterns as concentric shapes. This makes performing geometric transformations such as rotations, reflections and folding very natural and intuitive. It also provides tools for melodic lines such as random-walk generation and scale-based inversion and transposition. You can generate rhythmic lines using cross-rhythms or the Euclidean algorithm, and allows for great visualisations of complex polyrhythms.

Concentric Rhythm now allows you to assign each pattern to a different MIDI channel and send your results to other MIDI compatible apps or devices.

Concentric Rhythm was originally developed as a new way to improvise electronic music, but it is also a great tool experimenting with and developing musical material, or just for casually playing with music in a unique, hands-on, way.

Many of the ideas here were inspired by the book ‘The Geometry of Musical Rhythm’ and this app is a powerful tool for anyone who is interested in exploring these ideas. But at the same time is easy enough to use that anyone (even with no musical or mathematical background) can make interesting musical patterns and think about the musical world a little differently.

Features:

  • Inter-App Audio and Audiobus Compatibility
  • MIDI Send (as IAP)
  • Landscape for iPad
  • Completely redesigned Note List now integrated into main display
  • Velocity based transformations
  • Global reverb control
  • User sample management
  • Improved system for project saving
  • Tempo calculations based on user selected meter
  • Many bug fixes

Concentric Rhythm is free on the app store:

midiFILTr-PG Probability Gate MIDI Effect arrives from Art Kerns

Another excellent app arrives from Mr Kerns, maker of midiSTEPs, midiLFOs and more. Along comes midiFILTr-PG Probability Gate MIDI Effect. Here’s all you need to know …

midiFILTr-PG is a Probability Gate MIDI effect designed for Audiobus 3 but also usable with CoreMIDI. midiFILTr-PG listens to MIDI input and based on random chance mutes some of the incoming notes to make a busy, repetitive stream of notes a little more interesting and sparser. It has four modes:

Gate Mode – One set percentage to be muted for all notes. Also includes Gate On Repeats (when a note passes through unmuted, also pass through X more notes after) and Gate Off Repeats (when a note does not pass through the gate, also mute the next X notes) to make things a little more interesting.

Note Mode – Each note in the scale (C, C#, D etc) has its own percentage chance to mute incoming notes.

Sequencer Mode – Every eight notes has a different percentage chance to be muted. Can also change the sequence length to be less than eight.

Thru Mode – Nothing is muted, normally not used but there if you need it.
If midiFILTr-PG is inserted as an Audiobus 3 MIDI effect it should be setup and work automatically. If you wish to use it without Audiobus you can toggle the CoreMIDI input and output and use it that way.

midiFILTr-PG Probability Gate MIDI Effect is on the app store for $2.99 now:

Midiflow Adapter for Audiobus 3 arrives

Another app from Johannes Doerr who has brought us so many excellent MIDI apps in recent weeks. Here’s another that looks like it’s going to make a big difference in your AB3 set ups!

Here are all the details:

This MIDI app for Audiobus 3 allows you to include music apps, which don’t support Audiobus MIDI but only Core MIDI. It creates permanent virtual MIDI ports for input and output. After distinctly selecting each of those ports in your “legacy” music apps, they can receive and send MIDI from/to Audiobus 3.

  • Connect up to 10 receiving apps (like synthesizers)
  • Connect up to 10 sending apps (like sequencers)
  • Use multiple instances of this app in Audiobus

NOTE: This app requires Audiobus 3. Insert it into one or more MIDI input and output ports. Furthermore, this adapter only works with apps that allow you to select MIDI ports for sending and receiving. It won’t work with apps that have no MIDI setup page.

IMPORTANT: Connecting apps via Core MIDI is an advanced topic. If you haven’t done it before, please become familiar with it prior to downloading this app.

CONNECT YOUR “LEGACY” APPS TO AUDIOBUS 3
Audiobus 3 has introduced a powerful MIDI routing system that makes interconnecting MIDI apps a lot easier than it was before. However, not all music apps support this new system, yet. Midiflow Adapter makes those apps compatible, by translating between the “old” Core MIDI system and the new Audiobus 3. This, however, only works with apps that let you to select MIDI ports for input and output, or at least the MIDI channel. It is not enough if these apps create their own virtual MIDI port.

SETUP FOR SYNTH APPS (RECEIVERS)
Midiflow Adapter creates 10 permanent virtual MIDI output ports. This means that you can use up to 10 music apps with this adapter. For setting it up, start Midiflow Adapter. Then, start your first synth app that you want to connect with Audiobus via this adapter app. Go to its MIDI settings and activate reception on the MIDI port called “MF Adapter Out 1”. It is essential that you deactivate reception on all other ports. Now, go to Audiobus 3 and insert MF Adapter into a MIDI output slot. In the input slot, add any other app, like Midiflow Keyboard. When you switch to Midiflow Adapter, you can select which of your synth apps the MIDI data should go. In this case, it is already set to “Out 1”, so you’re ready to go.

For your second synth app, do the same steps, but select MIDI port “MF Adapter Out 2”, and so on. Then, you can select it in the adapter app.

SETUP FOR SEQUENCER APPS (SENDERS)
The procedure is identical to the one for receiver apps (see above). However, you need to configure the MIDI output settings instead of the input settings. Midiflow Adapter creates 10 permanent virtual MIDI input ports for that purpose. They are called “MF Adapter In 1-10”.

WORKING WITH CHANNELS
Some Core MIDI apps don’t allow you to select the input/output ports, but only the MIDI input/output channel. In that case, they receive on all ports. The only way to selectively trigger them is to assign a unique channel to them. In Midiflow Adapter, you can then select this channel as input/output.

NON-COMPATIBLE APPS
If one of your music apps neither supports selecting the MIDI port nor setting the MIDI channel, you cannot use it with Midiflow Adapter.

Midiflow Adapter for Audiobus 3 costs $1.99 on the app store now:

Resonator Audio Unit arrives

And another AU from Aleksandar Mlazev …

Resonator Audio Unit is an audio effect that creates natural sounding resonances in an acoustic body. That will add warmth and fullness to the tone of any instrument or to your record. You can control the acoustic body thickness, size and the amount of resonances.

There is also additional reverb effect so you can add reflections to the sound of the resonator. This is useful if you use the app as a standalone to get your whole sound and play on your instrument via iRig or similar adapter.

The app uses realistic and innovative algorithms created by me that you can not find in other software.

Features of the Resonator Audio Unit:

  • warm and natural sounding resonances
  • acoustic body controls for thickness and size
  • resonances amount control
  • additional reverb effect
  • Efx on/off button (available when used as a stand alone app)

Resonator Audio Unit costs $2.99 on the app store now:

Warm Distortion AU arrives

A new audio unit arrives …

Warm Distortion is real time distortion audio effect. It is a non linear distortion that works great with guitars, drums and other instruments. It clears the “hiss” sounds just like real tube amplifier. All algorithms are unique, created and designed for nice distortion effect.
The app works as an Audio Unit plugin and can also be used as stand alone real time effect via the device microphone or using iRig or similar device.

Features:

  • Unique distortion algorithms with natural tube sound
  • Gain
  • Level
  • Smoothie (hiss clearing magic slider)
  • Reverb (master reverb)

If you play acoustic instrument you can use headphones without a mic and put the phone close to your instrument so the app will work as realtime effect.

Warm Distortion costs $1.99 on the app store now:

midiFILTr-VF for Volca FM and midiFILTr-VS for Volca Sample are here

From Art Kerns, maker of midiLFOs and midiSTEPs comes two apps for the Volca FM and the Volca Sample.

midiFILTr-VF is an AudioBus 3 MIDI filter effect and CoreMIDI capable app that improves the MIDI capabilities of a hardware Volca FM synthesizer. The Volca FM is notorious for having a unique MIDI spec that does not listen to the velocity of incoming MIDI notes. midiFILTr-VF allows you to play notes with velocity as you would expect to by adding a MIDI CC message along with each note that controls the note’s velocity.

This app requires:

  • A hardware Volca FM synthesizer
  • A hardware MIDI interface connected to the Volca FM
  • The AudioBus 3 app is recommended for ease of use, though the app can also be configured with regular CoreMIDI.

midiFILTr-VS is an AudioBus 3 MIDI effect and CoreMIDI capable app that improves the MIDI capabilities of a hardware Volca Sampler. The Volca Sampler is notorious for having a unique MIDI spec that requires you to trigger individual parts on different MIDI channels. midiFILTr-VS allows you to trigger parts as you would normally expect to trigger a sampler.

midiFILTr-VS has three modes:

  • OCTAVE mode – C notes on any octave always trigger Volca part 1, C# triggers part 2, D triggers part 3, etc.
  • DRUM mode – The general MIDI drum spec is used to trigger the individual parts. Bass Drum triggers part 1, Snare part 2, Closed Hat part 9, etc.
  • PITCH mode – The Volca works normally triggering its 10 parts on 10 different MIDI channels. But instead of the Volca default of always playing that sample at the same pitch, the incoming note value will effect that sample’s pitch.

This app requires:

  • A hardware Volca Sampler
  • A hardware MIDI interface connected to the Sampler

The AudioBus 3 app is recommended for ease of use, though the app can also be configured with regular CoreMIDI.
