It’s been a long time coming, but it’s here at long last, with added MIDI and a mixer too! So it’s a big day. We’ve been seeing apps upgrading for AB3 for a little while now, and there have been quite a few today too, and I expect that there’ll be more and more over the following days and weeks.
For now here’s the app description for AB3:
“Open up new worlds of creative music making possibilities with Audiobus, the app that lets you use your music apps together, just like virtual cables.
Send live audio or MIDI from one Audiobus-compatible app to another: add effects on top of your favourite synth, use your favourite step sequencer to drive the whole lot, and record it all in your favourite DAW, sampler or looper. Plug in a MIDI keyboard, run it through an arpeggiator or a key quantizer, and record the result in your DAW, or drive several different sound generators with a keyboard splitter. The possibilities are endless.
Then save your setup in a preset to be restored with one touch later on.
With a completely new MIDI routing system, support for Apple’s new Audio Unit Extensions standard, a new built-in mixer, and huge new workflow improvements, Audiobus 3 represents a big step forward for mobile music making.
Audiobus has a rich community of over 900 great compatible apps.”
Audiobus 3 is on the app store now priced at $9.99

And I think that this is a big deal actually. I really liked MiMiX for iPad and didn’t think that they would bring out a version for the iPhone, but they have, and I’m really pleased about that.
Here’s what the app is all about …
MiMiXmini is the iPhone version of MiMiX – Mixer for Audiobus. With MiMiXmini You can take total control of mixing of Your favorite Audiobus enabled apps’ outputs in the most convenient way. Just insert MiMiXmini into the Output Slot of Audiobus, even into multiple chains to mix the sound of the connected input or effect apps. You can even insert MiMIXmini into the input slot to send the mix or any of the ports to an other app, like a DAW to record the mix.
Mix up to 8 Audiobus enabled apps including the system input or multiple channels of a multichannel input hardware
Send any of the ports to another Audiobus lane for multitrack recording or send FX
Set the main mix volume level between -INF and +12dB
Set the volume level of each input port between -INF and +12dB
Set the panning or balance of each port (selectable)
Mute any port
Set any port to solo or several port in multi-solo mode
Monitor any port or the main mix on the built-in oscilloscopes and VU meters
Control the main mix volume and volume, balance, mute and solo for each port using a MIDI controller or a Core MIDI app
Control the main mix volume and volume, mute and solo for each port using Audiobus Remote on a second iOS device
Set the MIDI CC parameters of each control via MIDI learn
Change the MIDI settings in-app
Double-tap on each knob or slider to set its default value
Check the saturation indicator for each port to check if the pots power reached 0dB
Check the clip indicator on the main mix to avoid clipping.
Close the scope/setup screen to see more ports at once
MiMiXmini supports Audiobus state saving feature
MiMiXmini supports multi-output hardware devices, up to 12 stereo pairs
MiMiXmini uses a 32 bit float engine so clipping can only occur at the main mix
MiMiXmini is lightweight – minimal CPU usage and memory footprint
MiMiXmini has native UI for iPhone 4s, 5/5s, 6/6s, 6+/6s+
From just watching this video I am amazed by what this device can do. It seems amazing and in such a tiny form factor! I always knew that Keith McMillen Instruments were good, but this is way beyond good.
Here’s what the video description says:
“Introducing Keith McMillen’s K-Mix: an unbreakable, 8-in/10-out audio interface and programmable mixer. K-Mix features 2 ultra-accurate, high-efficiency low noise μPre preamps, and a precision opto-tactile control surface that was designed from the ground up for an unprecedented level of control. We’ve made super clean audio more accessible, so you can focus on the music.
K-Mix is a go-anywhere, fully-programmable, audio multi-tool that can meet all your needs as an artist, whether you’re in the studio or on the road. With no moving parts, K-Mix can be transported in a backpack without the fear of snapping off a fader or knob, while still giving you unrivaled audio quality, mixer functionality, and control.”
One thing a PDA device can’t (currently) do is to mix multiple input signals. I found one possible candidate for a portable mixing solution, the Samson Mixpad 4 which, from what I can gather, is almost exactly what I’m after. But of course they’re not being made any more.
So, if you know of any really small battery powered mixers, please let me know.
Well, the long awaited next delivery from miniMusic is well on the way to being available. Now in beta test MixPad is a fully featured MIDI file player/recorder/editor. It will let you take any raw MIDI file with you on your Palm and play it with using the miniMusic Krikit audio engine, on connected MIDI hardware, or on a sound card if your handheld has one (such as the Sony Clie NX series, or a Zodiac).
MixPad differs from any other MIDI file applications for the PalmOS; it includes powerful graphic support for simple viewing, mixing and quick editing.
Usable for real performance situations, or music practice, MixPad gives you a powerful real-time mixer interface to control channel volumes, panning, and solos and mutes for every track during playback. The main display gives smooth scrolling of all MIDI data (including velocities and controller data) and zooming. Unlike other MIDI file players that use hundreds of kilobytes (or even megabytes) of memory for sound samples, our software synthesizer generates audio without any recorded sound; it’s only 10k! Unlike MP3 players, there is no recorded audio, so song files are also very small (usually under 100k).
MixPad currently works only as a song player/viewer. MixPad Pro will offer real time recording and MIDI file editing features.
According to the miniMusic site the software should be available in March which is really encouraging.
Coupled with this is a re-working of the Krikit audio engine synth to remove the latency issues that previously existed.
Finally I have to say that I love the icon for this application. it is superb!
My initial response to the app has been good so far. The interface works well although it has a lot going on, and files are easy to navigate to and open. The no latency synth is working well too. I’m going to have some more time to play with this soon and then I’ll write more about how it all works. Back soon.
I was really pleased to read this. Belkin’s TuneStudio got an iLounge’s Best of Show 2007 Award. Fantastic. I think it deserved it. I think it is a really innovative product, I can’t wait for it to come out. Well done iLounge for giving it an award too.
I was especially glad to see one in the picture as well. It is always cool to see these things in the flesh.
