I’m giving this some serious thought at the moment for my old 3G as I can see some real benefits of doing this with an older device, but I have some questions which I haven’t been able to find answers for as yet. If you can help I’d really appreciate it.

  1. If I jailbreak can I still use iTunes for app updates?
  2. Will my 3G be able to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2?
  3. Is there a way to ‘un-jailbreak’?
  4. Will my 3G still work with the SynthStation25 keyboard?

Thanks.

  1. iOS is so full of restrictions you can't actually loose from jailbreaking it. Just do it and you will not be able to go back again… instead you will ask yourself: “how could I have used an iPhone all this time without a jailbreak?”

  2. If I jailbreak can I still use iTunes for app updates?
No but Yes. Hold off updating with iTunes until the jailbreak is available for the new iOS. Every update in iTunes is like a factory default un-jailbreak as far as I know. Also be aware that Jailbreaking and Unlocking are two different things.

Will my 3G be able to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2?
I believe so – non-jailbroken will have a more limited feature set enabled though.

Is there a way to 'un-jailbreak'?
Yes. Just do a Restore from iTunes should take care of it.

Will my 3G still work with the SynthStation25 keyboard?
No idea. I don't see why not though.

  3. Maybe it's just me but I have jailbroke my iPhone 3G, unjailbroke it, jailbroke it again and unjailbroke it several times in the past couple of years and the reason I always end up unjailbreaking it is because it runs so slow it makes me crazy. Am I the only one that this bothers?

  4. If I jailbreak can I still use iTunes for app updates?

    Yes.

Will my 3G be able to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2?

Upgrading will un-jailbreak your device. You will need to wait for a new jailbreak to be released before being able to install 4.2.

Is there a way to 'un-jailbreak'?

    See above.

Will my 3G still work with the SynthStation25 keyboard?

Probably. Jailbreaking can sometimes break things. In my case it broke locate me under wireless. The thing is a fix for such things is often quickly available.

What app did you install when you jailbroke your device? Jailbreaking only removes the restriction to run only apple signed code, and it installs Cydia the other app store, it does nothing else and has no reasons to slow down devices (all mine are jailbroken and I never noticed any slowdown).

But once your unit is jailbroken, there a plenty of apps that could make your device slow.

Slow down right out of the gate with just Cydia. Now it's not the apps that slow down it's the typing that's really really slow and I do a lot of typing so it's really annoying.
